Self Healing Empowerment and Learning
As a tool for mental and physical wellness we believe that everyone should have access to self healing tools. Tools they can carry with them through their life. To help us deal with trauma, crisis, physical and mental pain, etc. Tools that are at our reach. We know that life isn’t a smooth journey and we will often be in situations where wellness will be challenged by life circumstances.
Our goal is to help our community feel empowered and learn about ways to improve their overall wellness and have access to tools that can provide us with long lasting changes.
We hope to do this by bridging the access and education gap in our communities.
SHEAL hopes to start of with the access and education of the transformative practice of yoga and meditation.

Yoga and Meditation at HMSA
Students
At HMSA the high academic rigor mixed with student personal problems and self/family expectations is the ultimate recipe for stress and anxiety. Students many times also sit all day and begin to develop physical pain. Access to Yoga and meditation practices can provide a tool to help students deal with stress, anxiety and get their bodies moving. |
Staff
Staff also have similar challenges to students. Work expectations, responsibility of being educators and many times their own personal issue create lots of stress and anxiety. In addition, many have stand all day, other had jobs that require them to be on a computer screen all day leading to bad posture and physical pain. Access to yoga and meditation can be a great tool to help ease such problems. |
School Families
Many families in our community deal with similar stressors as our students and staff. Having access to yoga and meditation for families and the community will help increase access to self healing tools that the entire family can use. |
The Need
We have identified wellness and health education and learning as key to empowering self healing and care in our communities. We want to focus on providing education and learning about the benefits of yoga and meditation and how they can be a great tools for self healing empowerment. Yet, we come across a couple of barriers to provide access to our community.
Accessibility & Education
Yoga & meditation Class access
Access to yoga and meditation classes in our community is very difficult. There aren’t any studios in our city and none are within walking distance. You would have to go to a neighboring city to have access. |
Affordability
Most studios nearby have classes that are very expensive. Most average $20-$35 per class. Most require you to bring your own mat or rent one for $. |
Education
Access to to education is via classes or online. Not everyone in the community has access to the internet or the financial means to join classes. Language
Yoga and Meditation is often offered in English. Yet, in our community we have a large population of people who speak multiple languages often not making the classes accessible. |
Time
Our community is majority working class. When studios are not within distance or have hours that do not fit with families schedules it creates another barrier for those individual to be able to join classes. |
Our Solution
Our solution to these issues is to create yoga and meditation education and access to our students, staff and community. By doing so we hope to create empowerment around self care and self healing practices.
